Original Java archives medevac history
In a somewhat secluded corner of Joint Base Balad, in what is known as Kelly Compound, the Soldiers of Alamo Dustoff Medevac operate a cozy little coffee shop known as Original Java. This coffee shop has operated under successive Medevac units since 2004 or earlier. Each rotation passes it on to the next as a place to relax.
Due to the remote nature of the Charlie Company compound and the need for Soldiers to stay at the ready for any medevac calls, going to Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities can be difficult. The coffee house provides a handy alternative for on-call crews and visitors from around Balad. Unit members volunteer their time in the evenings to provide a relaxing atmosphere for friendly gatherings. The coffee tenders are the closest thing you can find to bartenders on the base, and they are always willing to hear the tales of patrons or share some of their own.
For special occasions, the coffee house really rocks. On Halloween, many of the Soldiers dressed for the event and prizes were awarded for the best and most creative costumes. Christmas and New Year’s will be celebrated there as well.
The décor includes numerous old weapons (not functional) and displays coins and patches from several units. Sadly, the collection was larger, but the previous unit took most of it with them when they left. Still, the various patrons contribute when they have something to offer.
Soldiers and Airmen can come in and enjoy a hot cup of coffee or a specialty drink prepared especially by the medevac folks. There is plenty of room to visit with friends or play a friendly game of cards. Use the big screen to play video games, watch a movie or watch the big game. Wireless internet may even be available. Cigars are available for purchase and you can join others on the outside walkway for good discussion and smokes.
