Fort Sill, Okla.-Soldiers from the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade take a kneeling position while engaging discrimination targets down range at the Short Range Marksmanship here on 23 June 08 while Safety NCO Sgt. 1st Class Generoso Trevino, 1st Battalion 289th Regiment stands behind them with his safety paddle.

1st Battalion, 289th Regiment, 479th Field Artillery, First Army, Division West, conducts the SRM training for units mobilizing through the Fort Sill Mobilization Training Center. This was part of the Task Force 34 collective training, First Army, Division’s West’s, “train as you operate” concept prepares units for deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Theater immersion provides the tough, repetitive, realistic, hands-on, theater specific environment for deploying Soldiers and leaders to grow into adaptive warriors; First Army trainers constantly evolve the situations, scenarios and real-time threats to match what is occurring overseas.

Sgt. 1st Class Phillip Isaac, 1/289 Regiment, Observer Controller/Trainer gave the unit the SRM briefing and demonstration. Soldiers went through the four basic fundamentals; proper weapon ready position and firing stance, aiming technique, aim point, and trigger manipulation.
He also showed them how to train to standard in reflexive firing, target.

“After several hours of rehearsals using movement techniques the Soldiers then moved to the clearing barrel and on to the firing line.” said Sgt. 1st Class Generoso Trevino, 1/289 Controller/Trainer.

Movement techniques require Soldiers to practice moving with their weapons up until they no longer look at the ground but concentrate on their sector of responsibility.

Soldiers must avoid stumbling over their own feet and must be in the low ready position method when moving or turning and then engaging target,” said Trevino.

Upon completion of the SRM training, Spc. Ruby Montoya, HHC 2-149 Assault Helicopter Battalion from Grand Prairie, Texas said, ”It is very hot out here. It feels like 100 degrees but the training was great and I feel more confident in myself.”

Pfc. Robert Fitzgerald, of A Co., 834 Aviation Support Battalion added, “I have done this before in Minnesota but nothing like the training we had here today, especially under extremely hot weather and the training was awesome.”
