Students seek funds for troops
Students at Westminster Christian Academy are hoping to raise enough supplies to send 300 gift boxes to the Louisiana National Guard's 1-244th Helicopter Assault Battalion that has been deployed to Iraq and are asking the public to help.
Christine White with the school said items such as canned foods, tuna in the pouch, pre-packaged snacks, pre-packaged just-add-water drinks, cookies, unscented wipes, Purell hand sanitizers, Gold Bond powder, foot powder, lip balm/Chap Stick, insect repellent (no deet), ATT pre-paid phone cards, small flashlights, AA and AAA batteries, local papers and DVDs would all make great gift box additions.
"The most requested items are the repellent, beef jerky, underwear and tuna pouches," White said.
For parents of students at WCA, items can be turned in to the student's homeroom teacher.
"If you do not have a student attending WCA, you may bring items to Mr. (Stuart) Salling in room G4," White said.
Items need to be received by Nov. 14. As it will take about $10 to ship each gift box, cash donations are also appreciated.
This a second deployment by the 300-person National Guard unit, which in 2004 carried out 3,700 combat missions in Iraq, flying more than 15,000 combat hours.
